“Dans la Jungle Des Villes” which is presented as part of “Rendez-vous avec la France” series, is the last project of Stéphane Braunschweig, a highly reputed young director. The play is set in Chicago in 1912 where Schlink, a wealthy log treader of Malaysian origin gets into a ruthless fight with a penniless and idealist librarian, Garga. The fight is both realistic and surreal, because it is the form rather than the result of the fight that matters. In the end young Garga wins. But he will pay a dear price for his victory. He ends gains from the fight is only the satisfaction of having won. Schlink did not want to buy Garga’s soul, but an idea that will replace it. Stephane Braunschweig stages this mysterious Brecht play with unrivalled skill. He uses the stage like a chess board where actors become pawns lost in each other as if they were devouring each other. The sado-masochistic emotions that dominate the play are played out on a divided, black and white stage.
