SUZUKI COMPONY OF TOGA
- Written by: Tadashi Suzuki
- Directed by: Tadashi Suzuki
“Dionysus” written and directed by Tadashi Suzuki based on Euripides’ “The Bacchae” has been one of the major plays in the Suzuki Company of Toga (SCOT) repertoire since 1990. This play, performed all over the world, is a ring in the chain of works based on the classics undertaken by Suzuki. The play takes its point of departure from the social function of “story” and emphasises the conflict between religious pressure and political authority symbolised by ignorant collective faith. Suzuki says, “story is a double-edged sword”. In this context, “Dionysus” is the questioning of a mass movement that can no longer be controlled while at the same time it examines the value of the opposition. This is the contradiction of extremes that exists on the same plane.
