A PROJECT BY ROBERT WILSON AND SUSAN SONTAG
- Written by: Susan SONTAG
- Directed by: Robert Wilson
The New York Times described Robert Wilson as “a towering figure in the world of experimental theatre and an Explorer in the uses of time and space on stage.” Susan Sontag is one of America’s best known and most admired writers. The two collaborate in “The Lady From the Sea” based on a prose play by Henrik Ibsen. Susan Sontag reduced the number of characters to one silent (Foreigner) and five speaking parts (Ellida, Hartwig, Bolette, Hilde, Arnholm) and the plot to 17 scenes. Robert Wilson’s Norway is dazzling; a little Nolde, a little Munch , the landscape beauty reflecting the light tones, diseased gren, yellow and spots of beige. A huge foremast, Stones of similar size and timber. Ellida is performed by Domiqiue Sanda, the unforgettable actress of Bertolucci, Bresson and De Sica movies. Hartwig is another celebrity, Philippe Leroy. Costumes are designed by Giorgio Armani.
