For Ferhad to win Şirin, he must bore through the Demir (iron) Mountain to let the spring waters run to the parched population of Arzem and thus save them from the epidemic. Years pass and Ferhad prefers to face the possibility of death- or even losing his beloved Şirin - rather than turn his back on the people of Arzem who are relying on him. He continues to bore into Demir Mountain. Ferhad is no longer the same Ferhad that Şirin fell in love with; he has become the very people for whom he has been struggling. His struggle for his people’s freedom surpasses his individual struggle of Ferhad’s spirit: both in the name of his love and his longing and for the people through his ever increasing labour. This is the story of the transition from love to labour, passion to struggle and from individual society.
