“Yearning” is a probing, fictitious two-act play that chronicles Nazım Hikmet’s years in a Bursa prison, leading up to the days that forced the great poet to leave Turkey. The play consists primarily of Nazım Hikmet’s poems, his works, his correspondence and a variety of published sources concerning him. The most distinctive aspect of “Yearning” is its desire to portray Nazım Hikmeyt not only as a great poet and patriot, but also as a human being. His private life with Celile Hanım, Piraye Hanım and Münevver Hanım in particular is revealed through Nazım Hikmet’s works, correspondence and passed on memories. His loves, attachments and disappointments, as well as the individual and social joys he was kept from fulfilling in his desire to live life to the fullest are the themes of the play. As a sense of “yearning” determined the great poet’s life, “Yearning” has also determined the title of the play.
