HANNA SCHYGULLA
Hanna Schygulla is one of the most important actors of the new German cinema. She was worked for many years with directors such as Wenders, Schlöndorff, Scola, Saura, Ferreri, and Von Trotta. When Fassbinder first saw her, before she had even performed in films, he was convinced she was destined for stardom and she became one of his stock actors. In the theatre she was worked with luminaries such as Peter Stein, George Tabori, and Klaus-Maria Grüber. She has been singing since 1995. When Brecht’s name is mentioned, Hanna Schygulla declares that she grew up on his writings, “Whether in Capitalist or Communist Germany, his works were my companion. No wall built in the world could ever be more solide or provocative than his genius.” What might this legendary writer be whispering to her today? Schygulla responds to his question saying that with the accompaniment of Kurt Weill and Hans Eissler’s music, she is searching for “Brecht’s Songs” within his utterances. She imagines the reply is to be found within his own words. Mathhieu Gonet provides the piano accompaniment for this powerful interpreter.
