The definition of “misafir”, according to The Turkish Linguistic Society, is “the person who is in the act of traveling, as stopping by at a point or arriving at a temporary destination; traveler, visitor, guest”. However, the dictionary includes a second definiton: “An obsolete medical term. A tiny white spot formed in the cornea due to various reasons.” Do you know “The Guest”? Have you ever been able to recognize or meet one? Directed by Ahmet Mümtaz Taylan, “The Guest” appears as though he never were a guest but rather a fixed figure of history through ages, belonging yet to no place and no formation, as an entity way out of place. Just like “a tiny white spot formed in the cornea due to various reasons”, no one knows when he came, from where, and when he is going to disappear. “The Guest” looks yet deeply rooted there, so self-confident and well-established that makes you wonder if he were the real owner of the place. His reality, however, is one of exile: a complete foreigner even in the bed at home.
