Probably staged thousands of times, this powerful play is a tragedy. However, we begin our journey from the fool, the closest person to King Lear, who makes no bones about the truth, and disappears suddenly during the play, What if the fool tells again the story he takes along, with other fools? What would it look like if he tells what Lear went through from his perspective? We wanted to share a “foolish” King Lear story with the audience. Thus, we attempted to recreate the tragedy with a grotesque language. Jan Kott says “Tragedy is the theatre of priests, grotesque is the theatre of clowns,” in his book Shakespeare Our Contemporary. Maybe, now we can put what we have tried into words briefly: “We have stolen King Lear from priests and handed it to fools.”
