On the first day of school, Yaşar finds out that he is dead according to birth registry records. And throughout his life he cannot “officially” prove that he is alive. However, when he is forced to pay his father’s tax dues, he cannot make away with telling that he is “officially dead.”As he cannot receive his patrimony as well, he gets lost in the swirl of bureaucracy when he applies to registry office to solve his problem. He becomes a father, but he cannot register his son either. He resolves the mystery of life when he ends up in a prison because of insulting a registry officer. Questioning the relationship between the state and the individual, Aziz Nesin underlines the overwhelming life of “citizen” Yaşar against bureaucracy.
