Portuguese ensemble Teatro Praga (Plague Theatre) who define themselves as “a federation of artists” has been on world stages since the day they were established in 2005 with widely acclaimed plays. The 20th Istanbul Theatre Festival hosts the ensemble with the premiere of their latest creation, the long-awaited Zululuzu. The play presents a poetic journey towards the days of young Fernando Pessoa, one of the leading literary figures from Portugal mostly renowned with The Book of Disquiet, in South Africa and in pursuit of freedom. In the heart of Zululand, in Durban, he started writing his first poems in English and invented his first literary personae that would later total more than 70 in his self-searching circus. In 1905, Pessoa left South Africa and returned to Lisbon to attend university, never to leave his city. In this play, Teatro Praga will captivate the audience with their dissident stage aesthetic that confronts the imaginary borders separating the two continents and the sharp cultural codes of the Apartheid. Evaporating the line between reality and fiction by means of multi-media, this fantastic universe could only come out of the magical hands of Teatro Praga.
