From the Edinburgh Festival to the Kennedy Center, they are one of the most sought-after troupes at international festivals and prominent stages that have their finger on the pulse of contemporary dance. Shaping the future of contemporary dance through music compositions that accompany its immaculate choreographies, innovative light and set designs and brilliant dancers that hail from 16 different countries, Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) 1 will be joining the festival to perform a four-part dance marathon choreographed by four of their most prolific choreographers.

From Sol León and Paul Lightfoot, whose artistic collaboration that dates back to 1989 was crowned by becoming house choreographers of NDT in 2002, comes Shut Eye and Shoot the Moon; from Crystal Pite who celebrates her 10th year as associate choreographer for the troupe and know for over 50 award-winning choreographies for many others, comes The Statement; and from Marco Goecke, also NDT’s associate choreographer and a two-time recipient of Holland’s prestigious Zwaan awards in the category of ‘Most Impressive Choreography’, comes Woke Up Blind. Get ready for a breath- taking trip to the peak of contemporary dance!

Choreographer biographies

Sol León joined NDT 2 after graduating from the National Ballet Academy of Madrid in 1987. Two years later she joined NDT 1 and danced in masterpieces of Jiří Kylián, Hans van Manen, Mats Ek and Ohad Naharin. León continued to dance up until 2003, when she decided to fully devote herself to choreography, together with Paul Lightfoot. León became Artistic Advisor of NDT in 2012.

Paul Lightfoot (1966, England) is Artistic Director of Nederlands Dans Theater since September 2011. In 1985 he joined the company, starting as a dancer with NDT 2. Two years later Lightfoot joined NDT 1, where he danced until 2008. During his dancing career, he started choreographing together with Sol León.

In season 2017-2018 both new creations as well as an existing work by León & Lightfoot will be performed in the programmes Side A: Split into One (NDT 1), Sum Thoughts (NDT 2) and Savoir Faire (NDT 1).

Canadian choreographer and performer Crystal Pite (Vancouver, 1970) is associate choreographer with NDT since 2008 for which she created: Pilot X (2005), The Second Person (2007), Frontier(2008), Plot Point (2010, nominated for the prestigious Benois de La Dance award), Solo Echo (2012), Parade (2013), In the Event (2015), and The Statement (2016). In season 2017-2018 Pite will create a new piece for the NDT 1 programme Savoir Faire, which will premiere on May 17, 2018.

Pite’s professional choreographic debut was in 1990, at Ballet British Columbia. Since then, she has created over 50 works for companies such as The Paris Opera Ballet, The Royal Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater I, Cullberg Ballet, Ballett Frankfurt, The National Ballet of Canada, Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal (Resident Choreographer, 2001-2004), Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, and Ballet British Columbia. She has also collaborated with Electric Company Theatre and Robert Lepage. Pite is an Associate Choreographer of Nederlands Dans Theater, Associate Dance Artist of Canada's National Arts Centre, and Associate Artist at Sadler's Wells, London.

In 2002, Pite formed her own company Kidd Pivot in Vancouver. Kidd Pivot tours nationally and internationally, performing works such as Dark Matters and Lost Action. Kidd Pivot's residency at the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt (2010-2012) provided Pite the opportunity to create and tour The You Show and The Tempest Replica. Currently touring is the Kidd Pivot / Electric Company Theatre production of Betroffenheit, co-created by Pite and Jonathon Young.

Marco Goecke (1972, Wuppertal) joined NDT as an associate choreographer in season 2013-2014. His latest work Wir sagen uns Dunkles (2017) for NDT 2 premiered in season 2017-2018. Earlier, he created Nichts (NDT 2, 2008), Garbo Laughs (NDT 1, 2012), Hello Earth (NDT 1, 2014), Thin Skin (NDT 1, 2015; Nominee Dutch dance Zwaan Awards ‘most impressive choreography 2015’), Woke up Blind (NDT 1, 2016) and Midnight Raga (NDT 2, 2017; winner Dutch Zwaan Awards ‘most impressive choreography 2017’).

In 1988 Marco Goecke completed his ballet education at the Heinz-Bosl-Stiftung Ballet Academy in Munich, after which he graduated at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in 1995. Subsequently Goecke worked together with the Deutschen Oper Berlin and the Theater Hagen. Here Goecke made his first choreography in 2000. Since then Goecke is one of the world's most sought-after choreographers, due to his particular movement language. Goecke's work is performed by dance companies worldwide. Since 2005 Goecke is resident choreographer at the Stuttgart Ballet, between 2006 and 2011 with Scapino Ballet Rotterdam and since 2013 he is also associate choreographer with Nederlands Dans Theater. In the past decade, he has created over forty choreographies, including two full-length performances: The Nutcracker and Orlando for the Stuttgart Ballet. Goecke further created for Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, Hamburg Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle, Nederlands Dans Theater 1 and 2, the Norwegian National Ballet, the Leipzig Ballet and Zurich Ballet. In addition, many of his works are performed by other companies around the world, among others the Scapino Ballet, Croatian National Ballet, Gärtnerplatztheater Munich Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal, the São Paulo Compañia de Dança, National Ballet of Toronto, Maggio Danza Florence, and the Stuttgart Ballet.
