The collaboration between the Istanbul Theatre Festival, Belgium-based Platform 0090 and the Flemish Ministry of Culture continues in 2019. Flemish Ministry of Culture is contributing to the festival this year by supporting the dance companies Ultima Vez and Voetvolk, and the work of Begüm Erciyas.
How effective can a speech be? For example, could it be as effective as a weapon? Or is speech also an effective weapon itself? In her performance based on these questions, Gruwez focuses on speech which throughout the centuries, has inspired countless masses and spurred them into action, for better or for worse. Speech that has unleashed revolutions and fuelled wars, used the power of words to do so. Not only does it entrance the listeners profoundly but the speaker as well. Gruwez creates an orator on the stage who is immersed in a stream of words, possessed by ecstasy... A speech empowered by the degree of the speaker’s absorption in trance... The dance of the embodiment of an ecstatic speech... Lisbeth Gruwez presents the audience with an enthralling performance; using samples of a speech given by the ultraconservative American televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, she reveals the course of the rhythm of this speech; taking off in a friendly and calm manner, climbing to a compelling desire to persuade and finally reaching a violent climax.
