Our goal with this workshop is not to write a text or a script or to fix some theoretical rules, but to create and develop a character and a situation. And this is where the masks come in. The basic paradox of a mask (to cover a face – usually capable of a multitude of differing expressions – with a fixed form, and yet still give full life to a character) is one of the most intriguing and exciting challenges for an actor. Suddenly a mask sneers, becomes furious, it can look astonished or even become red with anger. The static nature of the mask disappears and reveals a great vitality. Like a script, a mask is not only form but content. The comprehension of the mask developing process, from the beginning of rehearsals to the perfect identification of mask/actor is extremely important – in all senses – to the achievement of the ‘final’ goal.

Other issues that will be taken into consideration during the workshops are:

  • How to create a theatrical scene from a particular situation, a story, or an idea.
  • What it means to be ‘played by the mask’.
  • How to let the body speak and learn how to understand and listen to it.
  • How to shape and be shaped.
  • How to find the right forms or shapes and materialise them.

Important Notice: Participants should bring comfortable clothing for the training, and some costumes to create characters. The workshop will last 7 hours, the language will be English and translation will be provided.

The event is free of charge.

For application, you need to register from the link until Friday, 27 October. A notification e-mail will be sent to the participants whose participation is finalised.

With the valuable collaboration of Hope Alkazar.
