Some stories disappear not because they are forgotten, but because they are made to be forgotten.
One such story is that of the Istanbul Greek painter İvi Stangali, who was born in Istanbul in 1922. Having studied at the Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts, becoming a founding member of the Onlar Group, illustrating the first editions of the Iliad and establishing a significant place for herself in the artistic life of her time, İvi was erased not only from Istanbul but, over time, from the city’s cultural memory and art history following her deportation in 1964.
Artist Unknown, conceived and directed by Zeynep Özden and Elif Sözer and written by Çiğdem Erdöl, follows the lost traces of İvi Stangali on stage. With Tilbe Saran, Fulya Peker and Çağdaş Ekin Şişman bringing to life different stages of İvi’s life, her fragmented selves and the memories she carried within, the production goes beyond biography. It explores the memory of exile and rupture, of lost paintings, unfinished works and a life left unnamed.
Forced to leave for Athens in 1964 with her one-year-old daughter in her arms, the equivalent of 20 dollars and a 20-kilogram suitcase, İvi was able to take only the notebooks she had kept during Bedri Rahmi’s classes. The paintings she sent from the Sirkeci Parcel Post Office to Athens were lost. Just five years after her exile, one of her works was absent even from anthologies published by her own friends. Another, despite bearing her name on the back, was exhibited in Türkiye for many years under the label ‘Artist Unknown’.
Artist Unknown explores how a person and an artist can be excluded from a city’s memory and cultural life, and the political, emotional and restorative dimensions of remembering. Extending from Istanbul to Athens, from the Galata Bridge to Sirkeci, from lost canvases to unfinished colours, the play traces these questions across places, memories and absences.
