This talk looks at the life of Istanbul Greek painter İvi Stangali, who once held a significant place in Istanbul’s art scene but was pushed out of the city’s collective memory following her exile in 1964, inviting us to reconsider our practices of remembering and forgetting. Moderated by theatre researcher and academic Esra Dicle, the conversation brings together art historian Seza Sinanlar Uslu, author of İvi Stangali: Ressamı Hatırlamak [İvi Stangali: Remembering the Painter], Zeynep Özden and Elif Sözer, who conceived and directed the play Artist Unknown* İvi Was Here for the festival, and actor Tilbe Saran. The discussion will explore the research behind the production, the nuances of bringing a biography to the stage, and different approaches to restoring voice and presence to a historical figure.
