Playwright and director Ferhan Şensoy says: “while updating Brecht’s play (Three Penny Opera) after 67 years, ı was impending more to John Gay’s “The Beggar’s Opera”. For instance, Gay’s Mack the Knife was an outlaw admired by common people. In Brecht’s play he is a pitiless burglar. Our character Bin Bela Mahmut is also an outlaw yet he admires Atatürk. Actually we are not too afar from Brecht, because in our play as well the depraved characters say the right things. “Three Bullet Opera” is not an opera. It is neither a Brechtiam work. It is an “Ortaoyunu” (traditional open-style theatre) and it is as epic as Brecht is close to the style of our traditional theatre star Kel Hasan Efendi.
