Boris Pasternak’s immortal novel, “Doctor Zhivago”, after its famous cinema version, is now staged by Yuri Lyubimov, who counts to the ten leading directors. The music is composed by ALfred Schnittkewho has combined numerous genres ranging from religious tunes to jazz and from the rhytmical elements of dance music to opera arias in his score. Lyubimov describes his work as a free adaptation and adds that Pasternak’s poetry plays a significant role in his approach. He views the novel as the “Tragedy of the Russian Mind”. This is an important work with all the political messages underlying the spectacular mise en scene. It is a trueprivilege to witness a Lyubimov production.
